Before the year 2011, there were no palm oil mills in the three southern border provinces, preventing the economic plant palm from expanding. Recognizing the significance of the economic crop, Mr. Somnuk Maneechote aimed to contribute to the land and invested in building a palm oil extraction mill with an initial production capacity of 30 tons of palm fruit bunches per hour, or 720 tons per day. The current production capacity has expanded to 60 tons per hour, or 1,440 tons per day, under the name Southern Border Palm Development Company Limited. The future production capacity is expected to be between 90 and 120 tons of palm fruit bunches per hour, totaling 2,200 to 2,800 tons per day.
Initially, the factory received a limited supply, only 30% of its production capacity, due to the low cultivation area in the three southern border provinces and the lack of knowledge among local farmers regarding oil palm cultivation. Therefore, there was a need to transfer knowledge about oil palm cultivation, including planting techniques, increasing yield per hectare, ensuring high quality palm is delivered to the mill, and addressing the potential negative impacts of low-quality palm entering the factory.
Furthermore, there is an effort to attract oil palm cultivation from other provinces into the area to showcase the potential of the factory and stimulate local farmers' interest. The company aims to increase the proportion of purchasing products within the area to 70%, with 30% from outside the area, and expand it to 120 tons per day in 2023, which is expected to boost occupations related to the palm oil industry in the three border provinces of the southern region.
The company also utilizes a portion of empty palm fruit bunches to produce organic fertilizer under the brand "Fertilizer Cooperative," certified by the Department of Agricultural Extension and registered as organic fertilizer. Additionally, the company is part of the initiative to develop the "Sustainable Palm, No Cutting of Unripe Fruit" project to enhance the potential and economic competitiveness of the palm oil industry in the international market, thereby improving the income of local farmers. Moreover, the company operates a "Palm Clinic" to provide guidance for farmers interested in cultivating oil palms but lack knowledge.
